Applewood Playground Receives Award from Disability Action Hall
GameTime’s Applewood Playground recently received a “Right 2 Play for Everyone” Award from the Disability Action Hall of Calgary, Alberta. On Friday, May 30th, the organization hosted a public celebration known as Speak Out "The Right 2 Play 4 Everyone" where seven awards were presented to people and spaces that have made the right to play more accessible, affordable and available to Calgarians. This annual event is in its 16th year and celebrates individuals and groups who are creating accessible opportunities for the Calgary community.
Representatives from Calgary’s Disability Action Hall chose the Applewood Park Playground for its thoughtful design in honoring the right to play for children and families of all abilities. The inclusive GameTime play space was made possible through partnerships between the Applewood Park Community, Park N Play Design, Co. Ltd, the Parks Foundation of Calgary and many community volunteers. It is the largest inclusive playground in Calgary and serves as a community centerpiece for recreation and play for all abilities.
GameTime and Park-N-Play Design are honored to be selected for this award and are proud to share the Disability Action Hall’s belief that everyone has the right to play regardless of age, disability and income. Tim Aylesworth, Park N Play Sales Associate, helped design the park with the guidance of Lynn Warkentin, treasurer of the Applewood Park Community Association (APCA), and her husband Frank Warkentin.
"The Applewood Park Community Association had seen many buses transporting children with special needs leaving their community and wondered where those children were going to play,” said Aylesworth.
“They began to think, what if instead of buses full of children leaving the community, there were buses full of children coming into the community? Their vision was infectious and I was thrilled to be a part of such a wonderful project! This playground demonstrates the power of community and the positive affect it can have on all of us,” Aylesworth concluded.
GameTime congratulates the Applewood Community and Park-N-Play Design on this exciting achievement and this fantastic inclusive park that enriches the Calgary community by creating opportunities for children and families of all abilities to play together.
