Custom, Inclusive Play in Alaska

Dream Big

When the city of Sitka, Alaska decided to upgrade their community playground, they wanted more than a few swings and a slide. They had a dream of an inclusive destination playground that blended play with their unique history and culture. They dreamed of a playground unlike any they had every seen. They dreamed of building it themselves. They dreamed big!

GameTime designers worked closely with landscape architect Monique Anderson and Sitka community leaders to make that dream come true. They worked together to create Sitka's first inclusive/ADA-compliant playground, a themed play space that inspires activity and active imaginations. By considering every detail and designing elements that mimic life from the forest and the sea, GameTime created a place that local families love and new visitors fall in love with.

Monique Anderson, ASLA - Anderson Land Planning "From the very beginning, GameTime was ready to provide guidance for this unique 100% fully volunteer driven project. Together we turned kids’ dreams into an Alaskan waterfront playground including whimsical sea creatures and a nod to our local fishing economy. The playground is a smash hit and the community is, of course, very proud because they built it!"
A Dream Nearly a Decade in the Making

2011: Project Selected at Community Health Summit

Volunteer group Sitka Outdoor Kids chaired a meeting to lead the project to create a "unique Sitka landmark dreamed up by our children, designed by a professional team, and built by all of us.”

2014: Steering Committee Selects Location

The newly formed playground steering committee identified the location of the new playground, Crescent Park, and presented information on the need for an inclusive, ADA-compliant play structure. The vision was established!

2015: Seed Funding Awarded

Thanks to funding awards from groups like SouthEast Regional Health Consortium, Crossett Fund, Sitka Women’s Club and  Sitka Rotary the group was able to begin the planning and design process.

2016: Landscape Architect Concept Plan

Led by landscape architect Monique Anderson, and assisted by the children of Sitka, designs for the community playground begin to take shape. A land plan is developed for the park and final preparations are made for construction.

2018: Grand Opening

On July 4, 2018, the Sitka Community Playground at Crescent Harbor Park is officially opened! Children and families of all abilties have a wonderful, inclusive place to gather, play and spend time together outdoors.
